![]() ![]() In order to be able to become a member of the Senate, the eligibility criteria is : one has to (a) be at least 30 years of age (b) have been a US citizen for at least nine years (c) live in the state he/she wishes to be elected from. The upper chamber, known as the Senate, is presided by the Vice-President of the state. Law making is the primary duty of the US Congress. The upper house is called the Senate and the lower house, the House of Representatives. The primary duty of the legislature is to make laws that govern the country. The country has a bicameral legislature, which means there are 2 houses. ![]() The term for the legislative body, is ‘Congress’ (like the British Parliament). Power is distributed between the three branches, so that there is no concentration of power in an individual’s hand. The government consists of 3 branches, the legislature, the executive and the judiciary. USA is the second largest democracy in the world(the largest being India), in terms of the size of electorate. This article is going to break down the political structure of the mammoth country, into simple, understandable parts. Fifty states, 9,833,520 square kilometers of area, over 32 crores of people and gazillion of ethnicities – understanding anything about the United states of America, can be a daunting task. ![]()
